To design this I wanted the viewers eyes to go straight to the center of the piece. This was easily established since the main element dominated the center of the canvas as the largest image with the largest concentration of color on the page. The eye then goes up to the first word and back down to read the text around it as it is a secondary element to the piece.
To start I used photoshops guide tools to help me create an even trapezoid for my gold bricks. Once that was done, I copied and moved each layer one after the other. I fiddled with the shade of yellow to begin with, trying to decide what would depict gold best without having to deal with multiple colors or gradients since I was trying to give this a cartoonish and flat feel. Then I fiddled with the background color. It was originally a warm color closer to parchment, but the gold bricks didn't stand out enough so I moved on to a cooler color. The text was a last minute decision, because I thought the space felt a little too empty. I think the image could definately stand on it's own, but decided to leave the text in the end.
